The STA Level 2 Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid is a one-day qualification designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge to manage emergency first aid situations in a childcare setting, specifically targeting child and infant casualties.

Aim
For learners who are currently employed, or who wish to be employed in a childcare setting, including nursery nurses, pre-school teachers, teaching assistants and student teachers.
Pre-requisites
Be 16 years of age or above on the assessment day of the course.

Assessment
The qualification is assessed as set out below:
- This qualification is tutor assessed through practical demonstrations and completion of a multiple-choice theory assessment paper.
Course Information
On completion of training successful candidates need to be able to apply the following competencies:
- Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
- The importance of preventing cross infection;
- The need for recording incidents and actions;
- Use of available equipment;
- Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure);
- Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
- Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock; provide appropriate first aid for minor Injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).
