STA Level 2 Award In Paediatric First Aid

The STA Award in Paediatric First Aid aims to give the candidate knowledge and assess them on their ability to deal with emergency situations, how to recognise and respond to serious medical conditions and serious injuries. The course includes training on adult, child and infant resuscitation manikins, the contents of first aid boxes and the recording of accidents and incidents.

Aim

For learners who are currently employed, or who wish to be employed in a childcare setting, including nursery nurses, pre-school teachers, teaching assistants and student teachers.

Pre-requisites

Be 16 years of age or above on the assessment day of the course.

Validity of Award

3 years.

Assessment

The qualification is assessed as set out below:

  • This qualification is tutor assessed through practical demonstrations and completion of a multiple-choice theory assessment paper.

Course Information

On completion of training successful candidates need to be able to apply the following competencies:

  • The ability to act safely, promptly and effectively when an emergency occurs at work.
  • The ability to administer cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) promptly and effectively.
  • The ability to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to a casualty who is unconscious.
  • The ability to administer first aid safely, promptly and effectively to casualty who:
  • Is wounded or bleeding.
  • Has been burned or scalded.
  • Is suffering from an injury to bones, muscles or joints.
  • Is suffering from shock.
  • Provide appropriate first aid for minor Injuries (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from a head injury
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from a spinal injury
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from a broken bone
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from an allergy / anaphylaxis
  • Administer First Aid to a casualty who is suffering from meningitis or Sepsis
